“the iscsi name specified contains invalid characters or is too long”

This applies specifically to the iSCSI Intiator for Windows XP, but might apply to other versions as well.

Check to see if there are underscores in your volume group and/or volume names.

    I know this is off topic, but I must correct myself from one of my previous statements;

    “But, I found that in Windows 2008 (initiator) against OpenFiler 2.3 (Target) [Kernel version “2.6.26.8-1.0.11.smp.gcc3.4.x86_64 (SMP)”] … I don’t seem to be having any issues with 2008 SCSI-3 Persistent Reservations”

    Once I attempted to setup 2008 as a Cluster using OpenFiler as the Shared iSCSI Storage that’s when I found out the OpenFiler does NOT support SCSI-3 Persistent Reservations. So, yes you can connect and use non-shared iSCSI LUNs, but NO you cannot Cluster with this setup…

    Again, I know it’s off topic, but I just didn’t want anyone coming here, reading my previous statements, and then pulling their hair out… Apologies all for any confusion…

    Thank you so much for posting this issue!!! The error is obviously very generic and I couldn’t tell what it was exactly refering to. VMware ESX Server has no problems with the “_” underscores in the Vol and IQN Names. But, I found that in Windows 2008 (initiator) against OpenFiler 2.3 (Target) [Kernel version “2.6.26.8-1.0.11.smp.gcc3.4.x86_64 (SMP)”] you cannot have underscores (_) in the Volume Name(s) nor the Target IQN(s). Also, I don’t seem to be having any issues with 2008 SCSI-3 Persistent Reservations, but that’s a whole different topic…

    At any rate, THANK YOU!!! You just saved half my hairline… LOL
